Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all three charts provided in the prompt, detailing the age of library members, total loans by category, and the trend in total loans between 2007 and 2016. The candidate presents a clear overview in the second paragraph, identifying key high-level features such as the dominance of adult members and fiction categories, as well as general growth over time. Specific data points are selected and reported accurately, such as '51%' for adult members and '36%' for fiction loans. Comparisons are made where relevant, distinguishing the highest and lowest proportions effectively. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat formulaic and could be further extended to reach a higher band level, as some descriptions simply list figures without deeper analytical synthesis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is structured into five distinct paragraphs, providing a logical progression from an introduction to an overview, followed by body paragraphs addressing each chart in turn. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, with phrases like 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'whereas' employed to connect ideas and contrast categories. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual inputs. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical, and the overall progression could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the membership breakdown and the categories of loans lacks a unifying sentence, but the text remains coherent overall.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, successfully utilizing terms such as 'proportion', 'category', 'growth rate', and 'highest share'. Less common lexical items are attempted, though with some lack of precision, as seen in repetitive phrasing like 'recorded the largest share' and 'recorded the highest share'. There are also minor spelling and lexical inaccuracies, notably 'acoounted', which appears twice in the text. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning and data points clearly without impeding communication, fitting the criteria for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures such as 'whereas children was at 22%' and 'Total number of loans recorded a growth over the years'. Grammatical control is generally fair, but there are noticeable errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'whereas children was' (plural/singular mismatch) and missing articles like 'the' before 'Total number'. Additionally, the phrase 'was declined' uses passive voice incorrectly for an intransitive verb. While these errors occur, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the numerical data accurately.
