IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of ages of four different groups of library members (children, young adults, adults and adults above 65) in Little Chalfont Library in 2016, while the table and bar chart give information about the percentage of loans by the seven different categories, and the numerical value of loans from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, the sum of all the educational materials taken by the categories in 2016 was higher as compared to the rest of the years. The year 2007 experienced the least number of loans issued after which the following year which is 2008 witnessed a slightly rise in the count of educational items received from members of the respective categories. The proportion of library members that were adults within the age range of 18 and 64 was higher than adults who were above 65. The rate of members who were children was slightly higher than those who were young adults and those over 65. Both children’s and adult fiction had equal proportion of loans received, and was higher than that taken by the remaining users. While the lowest rate was recorded in the children’s DVD, both young adults and adult audio books had equal percentage but of the second least proportion of loans issued.

In terms of the count of loans given in the bar chart between 2007 and 2016, the year 2016 had the highest value of loans issued at around 20,000. The lowest number of educational materials taken from the library was recorded in 2007 which was around 15,000, after which there was a rise in the count of loans taken from all the categories in 2008, which was almost close to 20,000 and this was maintained into the next year which was 2009.

According to the age of the library members in 2016 which was shown in the pie chart, adults within the age range 18-64 had the highest proportion of library members at 51%. Young adults which were between 13-17 had the lowest proportion of members in the library. While the proportion of all the educational materials taken from the library was higher in both children’s and adult fiction than the rest at equal rate of 38%. The least rate was found in the category; children’s DVDs at 1%, which was followed by young adults and adult audio books at same percentage of 2%.

Referencing is mostly clear, but the overall organizational structure lacks the seamless cohesion expected at higher bands, resulting in a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'proportion', 'category', 'educational materials', and 'numerical value'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'witnessed a slightly rise' instead of 'slight rise', or referring to library books as 'educational materials' indiscriminately. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical choice lacks the precision and flexibility characteristic of Band 7.0. Communication is not impeded, making a Band 6.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., 'while the table and bar chart give information about...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'witnessed a slightly rise', 'adults within the age range of 18 and 64 was higher' (subject-verb agreement error with plural/singular comparison), and punctuation lapses.
