Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student attempts to address all three visual elements provided in the prompt: the membership demographics, the overall loan trend, and the breakdown of loans by category in 2016. Key features are successfully identified, such as the predominance of adult members (18-64) and the overall upward trend in loans from 2007 to 2016. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and omissions in data reporting, and the response suffers from an under-length penalty, containing only 146 words against the mandatory 150-word minimum. The overview is somewhat fragmented across paragraphs rather than being cohesive. Consequently, the task achievement is limited by word count and a lack of fully developed comparative analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into short paragraphs attempting to address different charts, but the overall organization lacks a cohesive structure and clear progression. Cohesive devices are either missing, repetitive, or awkward, such as starting sentences with 'After that' or 'At last'. Paragraphing is underutilized, with the first two sentences acting as a disjointed introduction to the membership chart. Referencing and logical transitions between the bar chart, pie charts, and table are weak, which causes the response to feel disjointed. Overall, it demonstrates an attempt at logical arrangement, but cohesion is frequently mechanical and inadequate.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'membership', 'proportion', 'positive growth', and 'distributions'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling 'childrens' instead of 'children', 'yound adults' for 'young adults', 'dvd's' with an unnecessary apostrophe, and imprecise phrasing like 'major ups and down comes'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are constrained by word-choice errors and a lack of precision. The lexical range is minimally adequate to convey the main features of the charts, but errors in word formation and spelling are frequent enough to detract from the quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'In Little Chalfont Library major portion of membership is contributed by Adults of age ranging between 18-64 providing more than 50 percent of membership.' However, punctuation and grammar control are weak throughout. There are missing commas, run-on sentences ('...approx 22000 loans in 2016 a major increase of 7000'), and missing articles (e.g., 'the major portion', 'an overall positive growth'). While communication is not entirely impeded, the high frequency of grammatical errors and poor punctuation control prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
