IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two charts demonstrate the data regarding a public library in a town named Little Chalfont.
Overall, it is evident from the pie chart that adults aging between 18 and 64 years are found in excess in the library. The total figure of loans has increased slightly from 2007 till 2016. In addition, children's and adults' fiction dominated the total loan category in 2016, while children's DVDs contributed less in the category.
More than 50% of the library members found are adults, followed by children that are 22% in number. The younger adults as well as the adults over 65 years old are also members of the library, contributing 16% and 12%, respectively. Moreover, the total number of loans hovered around between 15,000 and 25,000 during the decade. In 2007, the library loans were just over 15,000, rose slightly over the years, and stayed just above 20,000 in 2016.
Children's fiction, along with the adults', contributed 38% in total loans by category in 2016. However, young adults and their audiobooks had 2% loans in total, with children's DVDs the lowest among all at 1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering the multiple charts provided in the prompt. An effective overview is included in the second paragraph, highlighting the main trends such as the dominance of adults aged 18 to 64, the slight upward trend in total loans over the decade, and the popularity of fiction categories in 2016. Key data points are selected and reported accurately, such as the membership percentages and the loan breakdown by category. Comparisons are made where relevant, for instance, noting that children's DVDs contributed the least at 1%. All reported figures align well with the provided visual data, demonstrating a clear understanding of the input material.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory statement, followed by an overview paragraph, and then breaks down the specific details into well-defined body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'More than', and 'However'. Paragraphing is logical, separating the general overview from the granular data points. Although referencing is mostly clear, a slightly more sophisticated linking of the data would push this score higher. Overall, the flow is smooth and the reader can easily follow the comparison of data across the different charts.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate and appropriate for an academic task. The student attempts less common lexical items such as 'dominated', 'contributed', 'hovered', and 'proportion' (though implied). There are minor awkwardness issues in word choice, such as 'adults aging between 18 and 64 years are found in excess', which sounds slightly unnatural compared to 'account for the majority'. However, spelling is accurate and the terminology related to charts, data, and categories is handled sufficiently to convey meaning without communication being impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and participle phrases (e.g., 'contributing 16% and 12%, respectively'). Grammatical control is fairly good, with a high proportion of error-free sentences. Minor inaccuracies occur, such as 'adults aging' instead of 'aged', and 'hovered around between' where 'hovered between' or 'ranged between' would be more precise. Punctuation is generally correct, and errors do not impede communication, allowing for a comfortable reading experience.
