IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The chart provides information about the members and borrowing patterns of a public library in Little Chalfont in 2016, as well as the total number of loans recorded between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, adults aged 18-64 constituted by far the largest proportion of library members, while fiction accounted for the greatest share of loans. In addition, the total number of loan increased considerably over the period, despite some fluctuations.

In terms of membership in 2016, adults aged 28-64 represented 51% of all library members. Children accounted for a further 22%, while young adults aged 13-17 made up 15%. The smallest group was people aged 65 and over at, 12%.

The borrowing figures show that adult fiction and children's fiction were equally popular, each accounting for 38% of all loans. Adult non-fiction represented 13%, more than twice the proportion for children's non-fiction, at 6%. The remaining categories were borrowed considerably less frequently: young-adult books and adult audiobooks each constituted 2%, while children's DVDs accounted for just 1% of total loans.

Looking at the overall number of loans, the library recorded approximately 15,500 loans in 2007. This figure rose sharply to around 19,000 in 2008, before remaining almost unchanged in 2009. It then increased to approximately 20,500 in 2010 and reached a peak of about 21,000 in 2011. After a slight decline in 2012 and a more noticeable fall to roughly 19,500 in 2013, the number recovered steadily reaching approximately 21,500 loans in 2016. Thus, despite some variation, the library experienced an overall increase of around 6,000 loans over the ten-year period.
