Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three data sets provided in the prompt: the age of library members, the categories of loans, and the trend in total loans over the decade. An overview is attempted, noting the most and least significant age groups and mentioning general trends. However, there are some minor factual inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the text states that 'the number of people who accessed library were 51 aging between 18 to 64, followed by the children with just 29 members less,' whereas the chart shows 22 children (meaning 29 members fewer than 51, which is mathematically correct based on the text's premise, but the absolute numbers are slightly misinterpreted in phrasing). The mention of finance in the overview ('required considerably more finance') is also unsupported by the charts, which only show loan percentages. Overall, the main features are reported, but greater precision is needed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical structure from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing the charts. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall,' 'To initiate with,' 'Additionally,' and 'In contrast.' However, some transitional phrases feel mechanical or slightly unnatural (e.g., 'To initiate with'). Paragraphing is appropriately handled, separating the static data from the longitudinal trend data. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing affects the smooth progression of ideas between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary, incorporating less common and ambitious terms such as 'delineate,' 'bibliotheca,' 'athenaeum,' and 'fluctuation.' However, many of these lexical choices are inappropriate or unnatural for an academic report. Words like 'bibliotheca' and 'athenaeum' are archaic or overly literary and are rarely used in modern English reports. There are also word choice and collocation errors, such as 'required considerably more finance' and 'The rest categories.' While the vocabulary range is wide, control over precise meaning and register is inconsistent, leading to noticeable strain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward syntactic arrangements throughout the text. Examples include 'data of a bibliotheca for public in Little Chalfont the age of members,' 'categories, required considerably more finance,' 'the number of people who accessed library,' and 'falling in in 2013.' Punctuation errors also occur, such as comma splices or missing commas. These errors occasionally cause the reader hesitation, though communication is generally maintained.
