Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address all three visual components provided in the prompt, mentioning the age distribution of members, the loan categories, and the trend in total loans over time. However, the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum requirement, containing only 111 words. Consequently, the information is somewhat limited and underdeveloped. While key data points are touched upon—such as the 51% figure for adults aged 18 to 64 and the top loan categories sharing 38%—the third chart regarding total loans is addressed very superficially, missing crucial comparative elements and failing to describe the full 2007–2016 period effectively. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count is met and provide a more comprehensive, balanced overview of all presented data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response exhibits some basic organization by dividing the descriptions into separate paragraphs for each chart. However, overall progression is limited due to the brevity of the text. Cohesive devices are minimal, and sentences tend to be disjointed with abrupt transitions between ideas, such as moving from the table to the final line graph with very little connection. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are overly brief and lack internal cohesion. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical links between the charts are absent. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive phrases to connect related points and ensure that ideas flow smoothly from one sentence to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms such as 'information', 'about', and 'followed by'. There are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, including phrases like 'comparing with various things age, loans and category', 'Pie chat represents member', and 'total loans by category on library'. Less common lexical items are rarely attempted, and spelling and grammatical word-form errors occur, such as 'proposition' instead of 'proportion'. The lexical range is minimally adequate for conveying very simple information, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are flawed, as seen in the opening run-on sentence ('The charts illustrate information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont and comparing with various things age, loans and category'). There are frequent errors in punctuation, articles, and prepositions (e.g., missing articles before nouns like 'table' and 'library', and incorrect prepositions like 'on library' instead of 'in the library'). Although basic meaning can be understood, the frequency of grammatical errors causes distraction and demonstrates weak control over sentence construction.
