Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts, including age distribution, loan categories, and the 10-year trend in total loans. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, noting that adults aged 18 to 64 dominated membership and that loans peaked in 2016. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting specific figures; for instance, the total number of loans in 2016 was approximately 21,700, which the student rounded to 22,000, and 2007 was around 15,700 rather than 16,000. Additionally, the description of loan categories contains some slight confusion regarding percentages. Nevertheless, the key trends and comparisons are presented adequately, meeting the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The text is generally coherent and divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to pie chart details, and finishing with the bar graph trend. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. There are punctuation and spacing errors between sentences, such as 'membership of library.the second highest', and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrase 'the majority of the pie chart was completely dominated by adults' where 'majority of the pie chart' is imprecise. Paragraphing is used to separate different data sets, but transitions between ideas could be smoother. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for a Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'dominated', 'significantly', and 'predominantly'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the response. For example, 'Children DVD's were strictly not used and were of 1%' is unnatural phrasing, and 'combinely recorded' is incorrect (should be 'combined'). There are also awkward expressions like 'the majority of the pie chart was completely dominated'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations place the response firmly in Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. For example, 'The given bar and pie charts illustrates' uses a singular verb for a plural subject, 'remaining age groups also shown' lacks an auxiliary verb ('have shown'), and '2007 have shown' uses the wrong auxiliary. Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing spaces after full stops. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a Band 7.
