IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the information about the library representatives and the number of loans borrowed by Little Chalfont Library in the year 2016, while the bar chart represents the total number of loans made between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, adults aged between 18-64 constituted the largest proportion among the library representatives, while fiction accounted for the highest share of loans for both children and young adults. In addition, the total number of loans generally increased over the period, despite some fluctuations, reaching its highest level in 2016.

To start with the age of library members, adults aged between 18-64 accounted for 51% of the population, which is half of the population. The smallest proportion was made up of those aged 65 and over, at 12%. A similar pattern can be seen in the borrowing categories. Although, fiction has the largest proportion of individuals involved in contrast with other categories. Adult non-fiction represented a further 13%, while children's non-fiction accounted for 6%. By comparison, loans by young adults and adult audio books each stood at 2%, while children's DVDs were the least popular item, at just 1%.

In addition, the total number of loans, the library recorded approximately 16,000 loans in 2007. This figure rose considerably to around 19,000 in 2008 and remained almost unchanged in 2009. The number subsequently increased to approximately 20,500 in 2010. However, it fell slightly in 2012 before declining more noticeably to around 19,500 in 2013. From 2014 onwards, borrowing resumed an upward trend, rising from roughly 20,700 loans in 2014 to approximately 21,500 in 2016, the highest figure shown.
