Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three charts provided. An overview is attempted, identifying extreme values and general trends. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the bar chart shows the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016, but the student mistakenly refers to the final year as 2006, and misinterprets some of the specific numerical values from the graph. The categorisation in the introduction is also slightly confused, describing the pie chart components somewhat awkwardly. Nevertheless, the main trends and proportions are adequately captured, satisfying the basic requirements of Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and separate body paragraphs for members, categories, and total loans. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'In terms of age library members', and 'In regard to total loans'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in repetitive sentence structures and awkward transitions like 'While, the table shows' and 'in same year. The total number'. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the response, but referencing and linking across sentences require better control to achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'dominant', 'proportion', and 'fluctuated'. However, there are noticeable lexical and mechanical errors throughout, including incorrect word forms ('categorys' instead of 'categories', 'chilren's'), spelling mistakes ('repectively'), and imprecise phrasing ('adults age 16 to 64 was the largest trend'). Vocabulary is sometimes repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms to describe data movement. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, punctuation, and article usage, such as missing capitalisation ('little chalfont library'), missing prepositions, run-on sentences ('in same year. The total number'), and awkward phrasing ('the figure began at 16.000 in 2007'). Complex structures are often attempted with faulty mechanics or tense confusion, such as 'before rose gradually'. While meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the high frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
