IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The charts depict the data of a public library in a town named Little Chalfont.
Overall, the highest numbers of library members were adults and the older adults comprised the least share among all the readers. The most of loans were granted on the children’s fiction and the adult fiction. The total number of loans was increased throughout the period of ten years.
The pie chart demonstrates that the adults between 18 to 64 accounted for 51% of all the members of the library while the children made up 22%. The teenagers under 17 and the older adults of 65 and over composed only 15% and 12% respectively of all the readers.
The table chart illustrates that 78% of loans were used in two categories, namely the adult fiction and the children’s fiction. 13% and 6% of loans were given for non-fiction collection to adults and children respectively. The rest of categories like DVDs and audio books contributed only a fraction of money.
The bar chart demonstrates that the total number of loans was increased from approximately 15,000 to around 22,000 from 2007 to 2011. Then the total number of loans was decreased slightly in 2013 and eventually surged over 20,000 from 2014 to 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data provided. In the overview, the student correctly identifies the main trends and proportions, noting that adults formed the largest demographic of library members, fiction books dominated loans, and overall loans increased over the ten-year period. Specific details are appropriately selected and reported, such as the 51% figure for adults aged 18 to 64 and the peak in loan numbers. However, the student incorrectly refers to the pie chart breakdown as a 'table chart' in the fourth paragraph, which is a minor misinterpretation of the visual format. Despite this, the key features, comparisons, and general progression are adequately highlighted, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0. Given the comprehensive selection of data points, it leans towards a solid Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to each visual chart. The progression of information is generally clear and easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used effectively to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'while', and 'Then'. However, paragraphing and referencing could be slightly more sophisticated; for instance, the phrase 'The rest of categories' in the fourth paragraph lacks precise article usage ('The rest of the categories'), and some transitions feel a bit formulaic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related data sets together, resulting in a cohesive and structured response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'demographic', 'accounted for', 'proportion', and 'surged'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, although there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'contributed only a fraction of money' (the charts show loan percentages, not monetary values) and 'The rest of categories'. Spelling is accurate throughout the response. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, occasional awkward lexical choices prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and comparative forms ('while the children made up 22%'). There is good control over basic grammatical structures, and punctuation is generally correct. However, there are some passive voice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'The most of loans were granted on' (instead of 'The majority of loans were for') and 'the total number of loans was increased' (unnecessary passive construction for an intransitive verb). Despite these recurring errors in voice and article use, communication is not impeded, and the sentence structures demonstrate a reasonable attempt at complexity.
