Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student attempts to address all parts of the prompt by describing the age of library members, categories of loans, and the overall trend in total loans from 2007 to 2016. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and omissions in data reporting. For instance, the total number of loans in 2007 is cited as 16,000, whereas the chart shows approximately 15,700, and the final year value is stated as 23,000 instead of roughly 21,700. The overview is somewhat basic, noting only the lowest and highest points. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of deeper comparisons between categories prevents the response from reaching a higher band. It satisfies the basic requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized into three paragraphs: an introduction, a body paragraph, and a concluding overview. However, the logical progression is at times hindered by mechanical transitions and abrupt shifts in topic, such as jumping randomly from member demographics to loan categories and annual figures within the same paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes repetitively or inaccurately (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Following that', 'Besides', 'Lastly'). Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the body paragraph lacks a clear flow. Overall, the essay maintains a coherent structure overall, placing it securely at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic information about numbers, ages, and categories (e.g., 'teenagers', 'senior adults', 'categories', 'total loans'). However, the lexical range is rather limited and repetitive. There are also noticeable word choice errors and unnatural phrasing, such as 'The given charts illustrates about' and 'the total number of loans inclined'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success or inaccuracy. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary limitations restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The library have loans', 'charts illustrates'), prepositional misuse ('loans in seven categories from 2007 to 2016'), and a typo in the conclusion ('ehich makes it easy'). Punctuation is basic, and run-on sentences appear occasionally. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of errors places this response firmly at Band 5.5.
