Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully reporting the main features of the charts and table. For instance, correctly noting that adults aged 18-64 accounted for the largest share at 51% and that Children's fiction and Adult fiction tied at 38% for loan categories. An overview is provided, capturing the general trend of the bar chart regarding library loans rising from approximately 16,000 in 2007 to 21,500 in 2016. However, there is a minor mischaracterisation at the beginning where the student refers to the age breakdown as a 'pie chart' when the visual data describes it as a bar/column-style breakdown or categories within the provided mixed charts, though the data points themselves are correctly interpreted. Overall, the task is well covered with clear comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is arranged into a logical paragraph structure, moving from a general introduction to body paragraphs detailing the specific charts and table data, concluding with overall trends. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall, it is clear that', 'Looking first at', and 'Regarding the remaining categories'. However, there are some minor mechanical errors in cohesion and referencing, such as missing articles ('the Adults', 'the rest of categories') and slightly awkward transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is present and appropriate for a short response, maintaining an overall coherent progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'proportion', 'accounted for', 'largest share', and 'fluctuations'. Less common vocabulary and precise lexical items are attempted, such as 'represented', 'category', and 'upward trend'. However, there are notable lexical slips, inaccuracies, and missing prepositions, such as 'illustrates about' (instead of 'illustrates the proportion'), 'rest of categories' (missing article), and awkward phrasing like 'greater than or equals to'. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary range remains somewhat restricted to basic reporting language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over relative clauses and compound sentences ('Although there were some fluctuations, the overall trend was upward...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly missing articles ('the Adults', 'pie chart'), incorrect prepositions ('illustrates about', 'in between year'), and minor punctuation/spacing issues (missing spaces after periods). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they recur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score.
