The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The three charts provide information regarding library membership, borrowing categories, and the total number of loans at Chalfont Library.

Overall, one of the most striking features is that the majority of library members were adults aged 18–64. In addition, apart from the first few years, the library recorded around 20,000 loans annually. Children’s fiction and adult fiction were the most popular borrowing categories, accounting for 38% each in 2016.

Looking at the age breakdown of membership in 2016, adults aged 18–64 dominated, at 51%, followed by children at 21%. Young adults aged 13–17 accounted for 15% of membership, while adults aged 65 and over made up the smallest group, at 12%.

In terms of total loans by category, children’s fiction and adult fiction were by far the most borrowed items, accounting for 38% each. On the other hand, adult non-fiction and children’s non-fiction represented much smaller shares, at 13% and 6%, respectively. The remaining categories, such as children’s DVDs, audiobooks and young adults’ books, accounted for 2% or less each, making them relatively insignificant in comparison.

Regarding the overall number of loans from 2007 to 2016, there was a clear upward trend. The number of loans rose from approximately 16,000 in 2007 to a peak of 21,500 in 2016, with the most noticeable increase occurring between 2009 and 2010, when the figure jumped from 18,000 to 20,000. After that, the number remained relatively stable and fluctuated only slightly before continuing to climb during the final two years shown.
