Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three visual components: the pie chart, the table, and the bar graph. You successfully highlighted key data points, such as the highest proportion of library members falling into the 18 to 64 age bracket (51) and the dominant loan categories (children's and adult fiction both at 38%). However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting specific figures (e.g., stating adults above 65 is up to 14 when the chart shows 12). Furthermore, some comparisons lack precision, and the overview could be more clearly integrated at the beginning. Nevertheless, the main trends and features are appropriately selected and reported, fulfilling the core requirements of Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body, and conclusion-like segments. However, paragraphing is somewhat erratic, combining distinct visual elements awkwardly within the second paragraph. Cohesive devices are frequently mechanical or misused, such as starting sentences with 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand,' which are more appropriate for an opinion essay rather than a data summary. Reference words and punctuation are sometimes faulty, leading to abrupt transitions between sentences and ideas, which occasionally disrupts the logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical range is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey basic data such as percentages and numbers. However, vocabulary is often repetitive and simplistic ('contribute,' 'high fration,' 'estimated'). There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'fration' instead of 'fraction,' 'childern's' instead of 'children's,' and 'whersas' instead of 'whereas.' Less common lexical items are attempted with varying degrees of success, and collocation is occasionally unnatural, such as 'face a acceleration in amout of loan.' These errors do not completely impede communication but restrict the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, articles, and prepositions, such as 'The following data illustrate information' (subject-verb agreement), missing articles before nouns, and awkward phrasing like 'bar graph figured out about number of loans.' Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While some sentences are clear and understandable, the frequency of grammatical slips means that error-free sentences are in the minority.
