Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The candidate attempts to cover the main features of the charts, mentioning the age distribution of library members, total loans by category, and the overall trend in total number of loans from 2007 to 2016. However, the data presentation lacks selection and integration; the response reads like a fragmented list of figures rather than a cohesive summary. For example, the writer lists every single year's loan figures consecutively without highlighting broader trends or making meaningful comparisons between the categories. Furthermore, there are some minor inaccuracies in reporting the data, such as stating the total loans in 2007 was 16000 instead of 15700. The response meets the minimum word count requirement, but due to the lack of a clear overview and limited data synthesis, it aligns best with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs and single-sentence lines that impede logical progression. There is a complete lack of paragraphing structure for an academic report, with the body of text jumping abruptly from age groups to loan categories, and then to yearly data. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, relying on repetitive mechanical structures like 'The 2nd one is' and 'and last one is'. There are no clear linking phrases to guide the reader through the data or to establish connections between the charts. Paragraphing is inadequate, and overall, the organisational structure is weak, fitting the Band 4.0 descriptors closely, though some logical sequencing of the yearly data prevents it from dropping lower.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily relies on lifting words directly from the prompt and the visual data, such as 'public library', 'library members', 'total loans by category', and 'children's fiction'. There is very little attempt to use less common lexical items, and word choices are frequently simplistic (e.g., 'illuarates about', 'twon'). Spelling errors are present, including typos like 'illuarates' and 'twon', alongside capitalisation issues such as 'little chalfont'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey basic numerical data, the restricted range and frequent mechanical errors limit the score to Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The candidate demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple statements of fact, often joined incorrectly or lacking necessary punctuation and capitalization. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('in small twon', 'is same'), subject-verb agreement issues ('childerns fiction is'), and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is particularly weak, with run-on sentences and missing periods at the end of thoughts. Although some simple sentences are correct and communicate the intended numbers, the high frequency of basic structural errors keeps this criterion at Band 4.0.
