Student answer (Band 7.5)

The charts provide information about Little Chalfont Library, showing the age of its members and the categories of items borrowed in 2016, as well as the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, adults made up the largest group of members, and fiction accounted for most of the loans. The total number of loans rose over the decade, despite some fluctuation.

In 2016, adults aged 18 to 64 represented just over half of the library's members (51%), followed by children (22%), young adults (15%) and people aged 65 and over (12%). Turning to loans, children's fiction and adult fiction were equally popular, each making up 38% of the total. Adult non-fiction came next at 13%, while all the other categories, including children's non-fiction, DVDs, young adult books and audio books, ranged only between 1% and 6%.

The number of loans increased from approximately 16,000 in 2007 to around 19,000 in 2008 and 2009. It then passed 20,000 in 2010 and reached about 21,000 in 2011, before dipping to roughly 19,600 in 2013. After that, the figure recovered and reached its highest level, at approximately 21,600, in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully satisfies the requirements of Task 1 by providing a well-developed overview and selecting the key features from all three charts. The student accurately reports the 2016 member age breakdown, the loan categories, and the ten-year trend from 2007 to 2016. For instance, the student correctly highlights that adults aged 18-64 formed the largest membership group at 51% and that children's and adult fiction tied at 38% for loans. The overview is clear and concise, capturing the most important trends without getting bogged down in minor numerical details. Data selection and comparison are handled effectively throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Information and ideas are logically sequenced with a clear progression from an introduction and overview to specific details about memberships, loan categories, and temporal trends. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the visual data. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Turning to loans', and 'After that' are managed very well without feeling mechanical or obtrusive. Referencing is clear, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the relationships between the various charts and data points.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for an academic task, successfully incorporating less common functional and descriptive terms such as 'represented', 'equally popular', 'fluctuation', and 'recovered'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, as seen in phrases like 'largest group of members' and 'highest level'. There are only occasional minor slips, but the overall lexical control is strong enough to convey precise statistical information smoothly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response exhibits a good variety of complex structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases smoothly (e.g., 'representing just over half of the library's members', 'before dipping to roughly 19,600 in 2013'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is consistently maintained throughout the text. Punctuation is accurate, and punctuation errors are absent. The balance between simple and complex sentence forms is appropriate for a high band score.
