The charts below provides information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting on the age of library members, total loans by category, and the trend in total loans over the ten-year period. An overview is present in the second paragraph, capturing key features such as the dominant adult age group and the upward trend in loans. However, there are minor issues with data selection and accuracy; for instance, the reference to 2007 loans as '15,500' rather than the approximate 15,700, and slight confusion in categorising age groups in the body paragraphs. Nonetheless, the main features and comparisons are successfully identified and reported, satisfying the core requirements of Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to different visual elements. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the one hand', and 'On the other hand' are employed to guide the reader through the data, although some transition choices feel slightly mechanical or forced (e.g., using 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to separate the pie/table data from the bar chart data rather than contrasting opposing points). Referencing is generally clear, though progression within paragraphs occasionally stumbles.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for task 1, successfully utilizing terms like 'proportion', 'share', 'category', and 'fluctuated'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'memebers' instead of 'members', 'noteable' instead of 'notable', and awkward phrasing like 'old people proportion'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, and errors do not prevent the overall meaning from being communicated, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including comparative structures ('whereas elderly people... represented the smallest proportion') and subordinate clauses. However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The charts below provides') and awkward prepositional or comparative phrasing ('when compare to other age members', 'proportion for loans shared the same percentage that is 38%'). While these errors rarely impede communication, they restrict the grammar score to Band 5.5 because error-free sentences are not in the majority.
