Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the charts and reporting key features and comparisons. The main trends and proportions are correctly identified, such as adults aged 18-64 being the largest member group and fiction books dominating total loans. Key data points are cited accurately, for instance, noting that 51% of members were adults and that loans increased from about 16,000 in 2007 to 22,000 in 2016. However, there are a few minor numerical inaccuracies, such as stating children made up about 23% instead of 22%, and a typo in an age group (654). Nevertheless, the core requirements of Task 1 are met with a clear and relevant overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement and is divided into logical paragraphs covering the introduction, overview, membership details, loan categories, and overall trends over time. Progression is generally logical, moving smoothly from demographic information to loan breakdowns and temporal trends. However, the use of cohesive devices is rather basic and mechanical, relying heavily on simple paragraph breaks and repetitive transitions like 'the bar chart shows' and 'looking the loans'. Furthermore, paragraphing contains numerous sentence-level run-ons and missing capitalisation, which slightly disrupts the flow of reading.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to handle the task, using appropriate topic-specific terms such as 'members', 'loans', 'fiction', 'non-fiction', and 'audio books'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with varying degrees of success, but word choice and spelling errors are present throughout the text, including typos like 'tablies', 'iotems', 'librabry', and 'somwe'. While these errors do not severely impede communication due to the clear context of the visual data, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'overall adults between 18 and 64 years were the largest group... while people aged 65 and over were the smallest group.' However, grammatical accuracy is significantly undermined by a complete lack of proper punctuation and capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and proper nouns (e.g., 'the charts give...', 'In 2016...'). There are also missing prepositions (e.g., 'looking the loans') and punctuation errors in numerical expressions like 'accounting for38%'. These frequent mechanical errors keep the grammar score at the lower end of competent control.
