Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at 137 words. Furthermore, the task is addressed only minimally. While the student attempts to report on the provided visuals, there is confusion regarding the data sets and categories. For example, the student discusses 'Total loans by category' under the impression that categories like 'Children's fiction' and 'Adult non-fiction' represent overall loan percentages in 2016, but misinterprets several figures or mixes up the details. Additionally, the overview is extremely basic and fails to clearly summarise the main trends across the charts, such as the overall upward trajectory of the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016. The response only touches on isolated data points without developing a fully coherent picture of the information presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation apparent in the structure of the essay, attempting to group information into paragraphs with introductory and body sections. However, overall progression is lacking, and referencing between ideas is sometimes unclear. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat mechanical or repetitive manner, such as relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' which are not entirely appropriate for contrasting demographic data with loan categories. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow of information within the body paragraphs is frequently disrupted by inaccurate data reporting and abrupt shifts between different charts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic concepts such as 'percentage', 'category', and 'highest percentage'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and phrasing that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as writing 'aproximatley' instead of approximately, 'loin's share' instead of lion's share, and 'represnt' instead of represent. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are sporadic and frequently inaccurate, reflecting a restricted lexical range that struggles to precisely describe statistical trends and visual data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a limited range of sentence structures, primarily relying on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object constructions. Attempts at complex or comparative structures are often faulty, as seen in incomplete clauses and phrasing like 'while table shows' missing the article 'the'. There are frequent errors in grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'Adult 65 and over show' instead of shows, 'Adult non-fiction show' instead of shows) and missing articles. These errors occur throughout the text, though they rarely completely obscure the intended meaning, placing the grammatical control firmly at this level.
