Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main features of the charts, providing an overview and selecting data to report, such as membership distributions and loan genres. However, some parts of the task are only partially addressed, leading to under-developed ideas. For instance, the discussion of the data mixes up some figures, referring to 'total number of debt' and using incorrect terminology like 'credit' instead of loans, and misinterpreting the line graph trends slightly. The overview attempts to capture the main points, but the lack of precise data reporting and the inclusion of vague statements limit the overall development. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to ensure all data is accurately reported without confusing borrowing terms and provide a more fully developed account of the key trends over time.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text shows some organization with basic paragraphing and an initial overview, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, with 'However' appearing awkwardly multiple times in succession to link sentences and paragraphs. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting abruptly between demographic breakdowns and temporal trends without smooth transitions. To improve cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of transitional phrases to guide the reader logically through the data, ensuring that each paragraph flows smoothly into the next rather than relying on repetitive connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but contains noticeable errors that cause some difficulty. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but misuses financial or administrative terms, such as calling library loans 'debt' or 'credit'. There are also capitalization errors for proper nouns like 'little chalfont'. Spelling and word choice issues occur, though they do not completely impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to use more precise vocabulary related to statistics and data interpretation, expand the range of synonyms to avoid repetition, and ensure accurate word choice and spelling throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles, such as 'half of the library community consists' without necessary articles, missing capitalizations, and awkward phrasing like 'the total number of loan decline subtly upto 19000'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition use also show frequent inaccuracies. To reach the next level, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with greater accuracy, ensuring that sentences are well-formed and that errors are significantly reduced so they do not burden the reader.
