Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data by summarising the age distribution of library members, loan categories in 2016, and the overall loan trend from 2007 to 2016. However, some ideas and figures are under-developed or slightly inaccurate. For instance, the student reports that children's fiction and adult fiction each accounted for 35% of total loans, whereas the chart shows 38% for both. Furthermore, the overview captures the main trends and proportions well, but the supporting details for the categories lack complete precision, placing this response comfortably at the level where all parts are addressed though some details are less fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and distinct body paragraphs dedicated to membership, loan categories, and trends over time. Progression is generally logical, moving smoothly from static data to temporal trends. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty due to spacing errors and simplistic linking. Referencing is mostly clear, and paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the report. To reach a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate more flexible and sophisticated use of cohesive devices without awkward punctuation gaps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'fluctuations', and 'distribution'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('liabrary', 'differnt', 'considerbly', 'memebership', 'cetogery', 'diction', 'approximetely', 'remaind', 'recoverd', 'countinous') and occasional word choice inaccuracies like 'diction' instead of 'non-fiction'. These lexical errors and misspellings do not heavily impede communication, but they restrict the score, as control over less common vocabulary is inconsistent and spelling slips are frequent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'After a slight decline in 2012 and 2013, the figure recovered and continued to rise'. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing capitalisation ('little chalfont liabrary', 'children'), missing articles ('half all members', 'least borrowed category'), and spacing issues around punctuation marks. Despite these errors, the structures are varied enough and the meaning is rarely obscured, allowing the writing to sit securely at a level characterised by a mix of structures and infrequent communication breakdown.
