Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is a graph, a table, and a pie chart. The graph shows the total number of loans from year 2007 to 2016. However, the table shows the purposes for which the loan was used, and the chart shows the age of the members of the library.

The total loan in these 10 years, ranges between 16,000 to 22,000 each year. And out of the total loan, 76% loan was for Fiction, divided by both Adult and Children's equally. 13% was attributed to adult non-fiction. While, the children's non-fiction got 6% of it. Rest 5% includes, 2% for Young adults and adult audio books each, and last 1% for Children's DVDs.

The members of the library were divided into four categories. 51% were adults of age 18-64. While, 12% members were the adults of age 65 years and over. The remaining 37% combines both, 22% of children under 13 and 15% of the young adults of age 13-17.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to cover the three sources of visual information, the overview and key features are limited. For instance, the opening sentence mechanically lists the visual components ('There is a graph, a table, and a pie chart') rather than providing a clear, integrated overview of the main trends or data characteristics. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or awkwardly framed, such as stating '76% loan was for Fiction, divided by both Adult and Children's equally', which misses the precise categorisation in the source data. Ideas tend to be under-developed, and the response lacks a well-synthesized comparison across the three charts, keeping it anchored at a lower level of task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division of information into paragraphs, each dedicated to a different visual element. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'And out of the total loan', and 'While' are used to link ideas, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive ('While, 12% members...' and 'While, the children's non-fiction...'). Paragraphing is utilised sufficiently to group the data by categories and age groups, but the lack of a smooth overall progression prevents the text from achieving a higher band. Overall, the structural framework is clear enough to guide the reader through the data, even if the internal cohesion is somewhat basic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to describe percentages and broad trends (e.g., 'attributed to', 'remaining', 'categories'). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'attributed to' and 'proportion' equivalents, though word choice is occasionally imprecise, for instance writing 'The total loan in these 10 years' instead of 'The total number of loans'. Spelling and word-formation are generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher level, the student needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of lexical items specific to data reporting, such as verbs denoting change or comparative adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in punctuation, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'out of the total loan, 76% loan was for Fiction' (missing articles and awkward phrasing) and 'Rest 5% includes, 2% for Young adults and adult audio books each' (fragmented structure and incorrect punctuation). Attempts at complex sentence structures often result in faulty punctuation or awkward phrasing. Although communication is not severely hindered, the accumulation of these grammatical inaccuracies places the writing firmly within this band range.
