Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data prompt by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features across the three charts. The student accurately summarises the membership demographics, the total loans trend between 2007 and 2016, and the breakdown of book loans by category in 2016. A clear position is maintained throughout, and key comparisons are highlighted effectively, such as noting that adults constituted the majority of users and that children's and adult fiction were equally dominant loan categories. While the details are well selected and supported, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or omit minor numerical nuances, which keeps the response at this solid level rather than achieving full development of every single minor data point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The text demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from introduction to overview and detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each section dedicated to a distinct aspect of the visual data (demographics and borrowing habits). Cohesive devices are used flexibly and naturally, such as 'In terms of', 'Regarding', and 'The remaining categories', which guide the reader smoothly through the different charts without sounding overly mechanical. Referencing is clear throughout, contributing to an overall coherent structure that is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
The student employs a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, demonstrating an awareness of style and collocation suitable for academic writing. Less common items and precise phrasing such as 'membership demographics', 'significant segment', 'negligible shares', and 'equally dominant' are used effectively. Word choice is generally accurate, and spelling is flawless. While occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation or word choice could elevate the response further if refined, the current lexical range easily fulfills the requirements for this band by allowing clear and precise communication of complex visual data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures and a high frequency of error-free sentences. The student demonstrates good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully handling complex noun phrases, prepositional phrases, and comparative clauses (e.g., 'adults constituted the majority of users, while children's and adult fiction were the most popular loan categories'). Verb forms, tenses, and subject-verb agreement are managed accurately across descriptions of past trends and static categorical data. Although a few minor structural slips or punctuation tweaks could be made, control remains strong and communication is never impeded.
