Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts summarize the information about the Little Chalfont Library: library members categorized according to age, proportions of loans contributed by various types of books and the volume of borrowings between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, the total number of loans depicted a rising trend across the given time period. Most of the library members were adults, aging between 18 and 64. Still, children's fiction alongside the adult fiction category had the most loans, with 38% of the total loans.

51% of library members were adults, while 22% were children. Young adults and adults with the age of 65 or above were in minority, making up 12% and 15% of library members respectively. Similarly, children's non fiction (6%), children's DVDs (1%) along with young adults (2%) and adult audio books (2%) had the least number of loans. Adult non-fiction, on the other hand, was the second category with the most number of loans. The number of loans, in 2007, was around 15,000 which rose to approximately 21,000 in 2011, dipping slightly to just below 20,000 in 2013. This number grew again to almost 21,500 in 2016, reaching the highest point throught the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data, including the age breakdown of library members, the loan categories, and the overall loan trend between 2007 and 2016. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the rising trend in loans and the dominant age group. Key features and comparisons are selected and reported accurately, such as noting that adults aged 18 to 64 formed the largest member group (51%) and that children's and adult fiction both tied for the highest share of loans (38%). However, some ideas and details remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of minor loan categories and exact percentages could have been more tightly integrated to fully satisfy the highest standards. Overall, the task is addressed competently, showing features of both competent and fully developed reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory summary to the overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct visual elements, such as the member demographics and loan statistics. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition phrases like "Similarly", "on the other hand", and "Overall" guiding the reader through the data. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, particularly in how individual data points from the table are listed rather than smoothly synthesized. While the organizational structure is clear and easy to follow, it lacks the sophisticated and seamless flow required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as "categorized according to", "proportions", "minority", and "peaking" (or reaching the highest point). Word choice is generally appropriate and allows the message to be communicated clearly without impediment. There are some minor lexical or stylistic inaccuracies, such as "adults with the age of 65 or above" (better phrased as "adults aged 65 and over") and "children's non fiction" (missing a hyphen). The writer successfully avoids excessive repetition and shows a sufficient grasp of topic-specific vocabulary related to charts and statistics, pointing towards stronger lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and compound sentences effectively, such as in "The charts summarize the information... which rose to approximately 21,000 in 2011, dipping slightly...". Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, and errors are relatively infrequent, rarely impeding communication. Examples of minor slips include preposition choices, such as "with the age of" instead of "aged". There are frequent error-free sentences, and the overall control of verb tenses for past data and present summaries is handled correctly. This performance reflects a solid command of sentence structures with minor persistent errors.
