Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to cover the three visual elements provided, the information selected is at times mechanical or inadequately detailed. For instance, the overview provided in the second paragraph simply lists the formats of the charts rather than synthesising the main trends or prominent features, which is expected at this level. Furthermore, some data points are slightly imprecise or under-developed, such as stating 'adult's have higher percentage of taking loans' without clearly grouping and comparing the exact categories provided in the table. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to present a clearer, more holistic overview of the main trends across the charts and ensure that key data features are accurately reported and compared rather than merely listed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident in the text, as the writer attempts to divide information into separate paragraphs for the different charts. However, there is no clear overall progression linking the information together cohesively. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, repetitive, or poorly managed; for instance, phrases like 'On the other hand' and 'As we see' are used mechanically and do not always signal logical relationships between ideas accurately. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is disjointed, particularly in the opening overview paragraph which fails to set up a cohesive roadmap for the rest of the essay. To improve, the writer should focus on creating a smoother logical progression between sentences and using a wider, more natural variety of cohesive devices to connect ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the charts. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fluctuation' and 'categorized', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, such as 'childrens' instead of 'children' and 'adult's have higher percentage'. These lexical inaccuracies occasionally cause slight difficulty or hesitation for the reader. Additionally, expressions like 'space occupied by the childrens' demonstrate a lack of precision when describing statistical data. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their range of vocabulary for describing data trends and improve accuracy in word formation, plurals, and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying heavily on basic sentence patterns with frequent attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('chart shows', 'in table'), incorrect verb tenses or agreements ('chart shows the age of Library number is shown', 'total number of loans between the year of 2007-2016 shown'), and punctuation miscues. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and impede the clarity of the message. To progress, the writer needs to exercise better control over basic grammatical structures, improve subject-verb agreement, and correctly employ articles and prepositions within descriptive sentences.
