Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting information from the three visual components: the pie chart, the table, and the bar chart. However, the treatment of the data is limited and mechanical. While the student attempts to highlight key features—such as identifying that adults aged 18–64 make up the largest proportion of library members at 51 percent and noting the overall upward trend in loans up to 2016—some parts of the task are under-developed. For instance, the discussion of the table categories is rather vague and lacks precise comparisons. To reach a higher band, the response needs to extend and support its ideas with a more thorough integration and comparison of the data points provided in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and is divided into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview sentence, and separate body paragraphs for the charts. However, progression is somewhat hindered by mechanical cohesive devices and awkward referencing. Phrases like 'On the other hand' are used incorrectly to contrast data that is not necessarily opposing, and expressions such as 'after that, children's has second number in that' disrupt the flow of information. To improve, the student should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices to smoothly link ideas and ensure clear logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items and specific terminology related to data representation, such as 'proportion', 'category', and 'fluctuation'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as calling the age distribution a 'Library number' and referring to children as 'the childrens'. Additionally, phrases like 'second number' and 'higher percentage of loans' show limited precision in collocation. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to use vocabulary more naturally and accurately, avoiding repetitive phrasing and ensuring word forms and plurals are applied correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in article usage, such as omitting articles or adding them unnecessarily (e.g., 'the 22 percent of the space occupied by the childrens', 'in the year of 2007-2016'). Faulty verb tense management and awkward clause structures also appear, as seen in 'Overall, chart shows the age of Library number is shown...' and 'As we see there are record number of loan taken out'. These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret, pointing to the need for greater accuracy and a wider repertoire of error-free complex structures.
