Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the age of library members, the categories of loans, and the overall loan trend over time. An overview is present at the beginning, noting the main trends such as the highest proportion of adult members and the upward trend in loans. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others. For instance, the discussion of the loan categories groups several items together rather loosely as 'all the remaining categories had the lowest interest in loans which all are under 3%', and some figures are slightly inexact (e.g., stating 'fifteen thousands people' for 2007 when the graph shows around 15,700). Despite these minor inaccuracies and under-developed comparisons, the main features are successfully identified and outlined, meeting the requirements of this band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, moving from an introductory overview to specific details about member demographics, loan categories, and finally the trend over time in the bar chart. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these distinct aspects of the visual data. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'In 2016', 'While', and 'Furthermore', but some of the referencing and inter-sentence linking are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'after looking at the pie chart the adults 18-64 had the highest proportion'. Paragraph transitions work well enough to guide the reader through the data, but greater flexibility in cohesive phrasing would be needed to reach a higher level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'proportion', 'category', 'steadily', and 'fiction'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion', 'respectively', and 'fluctuate equivalents', though these are accompanied by some word-choice and collocation errors that do not impede communication. For instance, writing 'showed the highest interest in loans' instead of 'accounted for the highest percentage of loans', or using 'fifteen thousands people' to describe book loans instead of loans made. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor lexical inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary from scoring higher.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and time-phrase introductions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omission ('adult non fiction and children's non fiction were the 13% and 6% respectively'), awkward verb forms ('were fall slightly'), and pluralization inconsistencies ('fifteen thousands people'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning of the data without significant difficulty. A wider range of error-free complex structures would be required to move up to the next band.
