Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the multiple visual data sources provided. However, the treatment of the data is uneven. While some details are accurately reported, such as the overall range of loans from 2007 to 2016 and the breakdown of members by age, there are some inaccuracies in interpreting the charts. For instance, the writer confuses the table categories, stating that 76% was used for fiction 'equally' between adults and children, whereas the table shows children's fiction and adult fiction at 38% each, but groups them together rather than separating the granular details clearly. Additionally, there is no separate overview paragraph provided at the beginning; instead, it jumps straight into describing individual chart types, which limits the development of a fully clear, holistic summary. Ideas are relevant, but some are slightly under-developed or imprecise, placing this response at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a visible attempt to group information logically by chart or topic. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, the loan data, and the member demographics. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For example, the transitional phrase 'While, the graph shows...' incorrectly uses a comma and a conjunction to start a sentence fragment. Referencing is also slightly unclear in places, such as 'remaining 5% combines, 2% for...', which disrupts the smooth flow of ideas. While the logical progression is generally understandable, these minor cohesive lapses prevent the text from achieving a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical concepts and categories such as 'fiction', 'non-fiction', 'audio books', and 'demographics'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'attributed' and 'categories', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the number of loan' instead of 'loans' and '5% combines' instead of 'combined'. Spelling is generally accurate, and word-choice errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without significant difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are a number of grammatical errors in tense usage, plurals, and punctuation. Examples include 'how much loans was taken' (agreement and pluralisation issues), 'adult of age between' (missing plural and article), and misuse of commas separating dependent structures like 'While, the 12% are...'. These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication. The range of structures remains somewhat limited and mechanical, aligning well with the characteristics of this level.
