IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts present information regarding a public library in a town known as Little Chalfont.
Overall, the insights from the pie chart show that the major demographic of library members consists of adults aged 18-64 and the minority consists of adults aged 65 and over. The table shows that total loans by category have the largest shares by the categories of children's fiction and adult fiction together while the smallest was of children's DVDs. The horizontal chart denotes a rising trend of the total number of loans in a period from 2007 to 2016 with the largest and smallest peaks at 2016 and 2007 respectively.
The age of library members in 2016 shows that around half of members at 51% are adults aged 18 to 64. Following up are the children at 22%. The two smallest shares are young adults aged 13 to 17 at 15% and the adults aged 65 and over as the smallest demographic share at 12%.
By category, total loans in 2016 show that the largest shares are of children's fiction and adult fiction, both at 38%. The largest share out of the remainder consists of the category of adult non-fiction at 13% and the smallest share is of children's DVDs at 1%.
The total number of loans in the other hand in a period from 2007 to 2016 show a rising trend with smallest recorded amount in 2007 at just a bit over 15000 and the largest total number in 2016 at more than 20000. A notable observation is that between 2012 and 2014 there is a slight fluctuation of the mentioned rising trend as in 2013, the total number of loans estimated at under 20000 was smaller than the almost equal amount of total loans in 2012 and 2014 which was a bit over 20000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and detailing data from the pie chart, table, and line graph. Main features are clearly reported and appropriate comparisons are made. For instance, the overview successfully captures the main demographic trends and loan categories, and the body paragraphs accurately cite specific figures such as 51% for adults aged 18 to 64 and equal shares of 38% for children's and adult fiction. The response sits at this level because while all requirements are addressed with a clear overview and supported details, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise or slightly elaborate on secondary fluctuations rather than deeply integrating all comparative insights. To reach a higher level, the response could more seamlessly weave together data points across the different charts to highlight broader correlations rather than treating each visual entirely in isolation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The writing demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to the age demographics, loan categories, and the trend over time. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Following up', and 'By category' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the cohesion is occasionally slightly mechanical, and referencing between ideas can feel formulaic. For example, the transition phrase 'The total number of loans in the other hand' contains a preposition slip that disrupts the natural flow. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to employ more sophisticated, less predictable referencing and ensure that paragraph transitions are completely seamless and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, attempting less common items such as 'demographic', 'minority', and 'fluctuation'. Word choices are generally appropriate for conveying statistical information, as seen in phrases like 'rising trend' and 'largest shares'. However, occasional inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing prevent a higher score. For instance, writing 'largest and smallest peaks' is slightly oxymoronic since 'peak' inherently refers to a high point, and the phrase 'in the other hand' contains a lexical-prepositional mismatch. To improve further, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise synonyms for statistical changes and refine control over collocation and idiomatic phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, showing general control over grammar and punctuation. Frequent error-free sentences are achieved, particularly in descriptive statements such as 'around half of members at 51% are adults aged 18 to 64'. Nevertheless, a few persistent errors remain, such as missing articles ('at smallest recorded amount') and awkward prepositional integration ('estimated at under 20000'). Punctuation is mostly accurate, though occasional comma splices or missing commas around transitional clauses slightly disrupt sentence boundaries. To attain a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor structural slips.
