IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The three different charts illustrate data about the Little Chalfont library. The pie chart categorizes library members by age; the table shows the seven loan categories in 2016, and the bar chart highlights the total number of loans taken from 2007 to 2016.
Overall, adults aged 16-64 are the dominant category of library users, while adults aged 65 and over constitute the lowest share. The highest loans are for children's fiction and adult fiction, whereas children's DVDs contribute the least. The number of loans taken was highest in 2016 and lowest in 2007.
The pie chart represents adults aged 18-64 as the largest group of library users, with 51 members. The second-largest category is children at 22 members. Young adults (13-17) comprise 15 library members, and adults aged 65 and over have the smallest number of library users (12 members).
The table shows that children's fiction and adult fiction (38%) constitute the largest categories for which loans are taken. Meanwhile, loans taken for other categories are relatively lower: adult non-fiction (13%), children's non-fiction (6%), young adults (2%), and adult audio books (2%). The smallest category is children's DVDs, at 1%.
The bar chart shows that from 2007 to 2011, the number of loans fluctuated slightly, starting at 16000 and ending at 21000. Whereas in 2012 and 2013 it slightly decreased, and by 2016, it peaked at 22000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by summarising the three distinct visual sources: the pie chart, the table, and the bar chart. In the overview, the student clearly highlights the main features and trends, such as identifying adults aged 18-64 and children's fiction/adult fiction as dominant categories, alongside the overall peak in loans by 2016. However, some ideas are a little unbalanced or lack fuller extension. For example, while the data for the pie chart and table are reported accurately, the description of the bar chart trends is slightly generalized, stating that loans 'fluctuated slightly' between 2007 and 2011 without noting the general upward trajectory more precisely. To reach the next band, the response would need to integrate the data more fluidly and provide a more fully developed commentary on the broader trends across all charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression, with a logical structure where the introduction is followed by an effective overview paragraph, and subsequent body paragraphs are each dedicated to one of the three charts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each visual aid. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, such as 'Meanwhile' and 'The second-largest category', creating a coherent flow of information. However, some cohesive referencing is slightly mechanical or repetitive in its sentence-opening patterns, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Additionally, transitions between the distinct data sets could be smoother to create a more integrated and unified comparison rather than treating the three charts as entirely isolated blocks.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'categorizes', 'dominant category', 'constitute', 'proportion', and 'fluctuated'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'dominant' and 'contribute the least'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as referring to the data points in the pie chart as 'members' when they represent count numbers, or minor infelicities in collocation. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate and do not impede communication. To move into a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of sophisticated, less common lexical items with more precise control over style and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting relative clauses and participial phrases. There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly in the straightforward descriptive segments, such as 'The table shows that children's fiction and adult fiction (38%) constitute the largest categories.' Grammatical errors are relatively minor and infrequent, including slight slips with prepositions or articles. Punctuation is generally well controlled. To achieve a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with consistent accuracy, ensuring that multi-clause sentences remain entirely error-free throughout.
