Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the age of library users, loan categories, and the trend in total loans over a ten-year period, successfully hitting the requirements for a solid score. Key features and comparisons are highlighted, such as adults aged 18-64 making up the majority of library members at 51% and children's and adult fiction tying for the highest loan percentage at 38%. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation—for instance, stating that 2016 maintained the highest loans with 22,500 when the chart shows around 21,700. To reach the next level, the data selection should be slightly more precise and comparisons more fully extended throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing different charts, and an overview. Information flows logically from membership demographics to loan categories and finally to the timeline of total loans. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related data. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features awkward referencing, such as 'while the year also remained as the year with the highest number of loans disbursed'. Furthermore, transitional markers and cohesive devices could be employed more flexibly to establish a smoother, more natural progression between ideas rather than relying on basic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the statistical information with terms such as 'proportion', 'dominated', 'respectively', and 'aggregate number'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and collocations are slightly imprecise, such as 'total proportion of loans discharged' instead of 'distributed' or 'dispensed', and 'loans was mostly given' instead of 'distributed'. Spelling is generally accurate, though minor lapses occur. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over less common lexical items and ensure more natural word combinations appropriate for academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and compound sentences. There is reasonable control over basic structures, but several grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('loans was mostly given') and awkward phrasing in complex structures ('respectively used the library'). Punctuation and articles also show occasional lapses. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at the band level, but to achieve a higher score, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences when attempting complex grammatical structures.
