IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The charts provide information about a public library in the town of Little Chalfont, including the proportion of its members by age group and the types of books borrowed.
Overall, the largest proportion of library members were adults aged 18–59, while people aged 60 and over represented the smallest group. In terms of books borrowed, adult fiction was the most popular category, whereas children’s fiction accounted for the lowest proportion.
Adults aged 18–59 made up the majority of library members, at approximately 55%. Children under 18 accounted for around 25% of the membership, while the remaining 20% consisted of people aged 60 and above. Thus, the library was used considerably more by working-age adults than by either children or older people.
Regarding book borrowing, adult fiction represented about 40% of all loans, making it the most frequently borrowed type. Adult non-fiction was the second most popular category, at roughly 30%. Children’s non-fiction accounted for around 20%, while children’s fiction was the least popular, at approximately 10%.
In summary, the library was predominantly used by adults, and fiction books, particularly adult fiction, were borrowed more frequently than non-fiction titles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and tangentially because the student fails to use the actual data provided in the visual prompts. Instead of reporting the true figures from the charts—such as 51 adults aged 18-64 or the exact percentages for loans like children's fiction at 38% and adult fiction at 38%—the writer invents or inaccurately estimates the data, stating proportions like 'approximately 55%' for members and 'about 40%' or 'roughly 30%' for book categories. Furthermore, the line graph showing the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016 is completely omitted from the summary. Consequently, the information is factually misleading regarding the source material.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction, body paragraphs examining different aspects of the charts, and a concise summary conclusion. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader through the text, as seen in expressions like 'In terms of books borrowed', 'Regarding book borrowing', and 'Thus'. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently, ensuring that each distinct theme is addressed in its own logical section without causing confusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision. Less common lexical items and phrasing are attempted with a general awareness of style and collocation, such as 'proportion', 'represented the smallest group', and 'predominantly used'. There is an adequate range for the task, and occasional inaccuracies in representing statistical data do not fundamentally impede the flow of communication, reflecting a solid command of everyday and semi-formal topic-specific vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
A wide variety of complex structures is employed, and frequent error-free sentences are evident throughout the response. The writer displays good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully utilizing subordination and participial elements within sentences such as 'Adults aged 18–59 made up the majority of library members, at approximately 55%' and 'Adult non-fiction was the second most popular category, at roughly 30%'. Verb forms, tense consistency, and prepositions are handled with a high degree of accuracy, resulting in smooth and grammatically secure sentence patterns.
