Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the information across the three visual representations provided, successfully selecting main features and making relevant comparisons. For example, the overview correctly identifies the dominant age group and highlights the popularity of fiction. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others. While the body paragraph details the age distribution reasonably well, the reporting of the loan categories is incomplete and abruptly trails off at the end of the text without finishing the description of the remaining data. To reach a higher level, the response needs to fully extend all parts of the data without leaving sections abruptly under-developed or incomplete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, showing that information is logically organised. The transition from discussing the age distribution to the loan categories is adequately managed. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear. For instance, the transition 'Looking first at' helps guide the reader, but the lack of proper punctuation and the incomplete final sentence disrupt the logical progression and smooth flow of the text. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should ensure that cohesive devices are used more skilfully and that all paragraphs maintain an uninterrupted, logical progression from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'distribution', and 'constituted'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including typographical mistakes like 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'grap' instead of 'graph', 'genrally', 'represtented', and 'yound adults'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a lower band limitation. To move up to the next band, the student must demonstrate greater control over spelling, word forms, and word choices, ensuring that vocabulary is used accurately without mechanical slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'while the table shows the percentage of loans by category in the same year.' There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('accounted largest proportion', 'are smallest group'), subject-verb agreement issues ('adults aged 65 and over are smallest group'), and punctuation omissions such as missing full stops at the end of the response. These errors are typical of this band level; while they rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the text. To improve grammatically, the student should focus on articles, prepositions inside grammatical patterns, and careful proofreading to ensure sentence structures are fully controlled.
