Student answer (Band 7.0)

The various diagrams provide information of Little Chalfont Library, which is a public library in a suburb.

Overall, it is evident that the highest number of members of the library are between the age of 18 to 64, while the number of young adults (13-17) and adults over the age of 65 are similar. Among the library members, children's fiction and adult fiction categories account for vast majority of total loans. Moreover, the total number of loans increased initially from the beginning of the period but remained steady for the rest of the period.

In 20016, adults between age of 18 and 64 accounted 51% of total library membership, followed by children at 22%. The proportion of young adults from 13 to 17 and adults above the age of 65 reported 12% and 15% respectively.

For total loans by category in 2016, children's fiction and adult fiction share was 38% each, while adult non-fiction proportion was 13% and 6% for children's non-fiction. The other remaining categories were children's DVD, young adults, and adult audio and they together tallied for just 5%.

Total number of loans in 2007 was approximately 16000, which increased to roughly 18000 in 2008. Since then the total figure fluctuated and peaked at around 22000 in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features from the mixed charts of Little Chalfont Library. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominant age groups, loan categories, and overall trends across the years. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the peak membership for adults aged 18 to 64 at 51 percent and the dominant loan shares for fiction. While some specific details, such as minor loan percentages and the exact membership figure for the over-65 group, contain minor calculation or transcription discrepancies, the overall reporting is clear and well-supported, satisfying the requirements of this band level. To reach a higher level, the writer could provide a more precise integration of the data without minor generalisation slips.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by a well-defined overview, and then breaking down the specific details into membership, categories, and yearly trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'Among the library members', 'Moreover', and 'For total loans by category'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher standard, the writer could employ more seamless and subtle cohesive links to connect sentences and ideas, ensuring that progression feels entirely natural and unobtrusive from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to convey the information with some flexibility and precision. The writer successfully employs less common vocabulary items and functional phrases such as 'account for vast majority', 'proportion', 'fluctuated', and 'peaked'. However, there are occasional lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as writing 'In 20016' instead of '2016' and stating that groups 'reported' percentages rather than accounted for them. Furthermore, some collocations could be more natural. These minor slips do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at this level. Integrating a wider variety of sophisticated, precise phrasing would elevate the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include 'While the number of young adults... are similar' and 'Total number of loans in 2007 was approximately 16000, which increased to roughly 18000 in 2008.' There are some grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('between age of 18', 'accounted 51%') and subject-verb agreement slips ('the number of... are similar'). Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. To reach the next level, the writer needs to maintain a higher frequency of entirely error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over prepositions and articles.
