Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by mentioning information from the charts regarding Little Chalfont Library, but it does so only minimally and tangentially. While it presents some figures from the data, such as the percentages for the age of library members and loan categories, it fails to provide a clear or accurate overview of the main trends. Furthermore, the descriptions are disjointed and difficult to follow, showing a partial and poorly organised attempt to report the visual data. The writing lacks meaningful comparison between the charts, which is essential for this task. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure all key features are accurately presented, supported by a clear, cohesive overview that highlights the most important trends and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text lacks a clear logical progression and overall organization. While it is broken into paragraphs, the internal structure of these paragraphs is extremely weak and confusing. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, resulting in a series of disconnected statements rather than a flowing report. For instance, transitional phrases like 'According to the chat' and 'at the end seven category' fail to guide the reader smoothly through the data. Additionally, referencing is unclear, making it hard to determine which numbers correspond to which categories. To achieve a better band, the writer needs to group related information logically, use appropriate cohesive devices to link ideas, and ensure the overall structure flows naturally from an introduction to an overview and detailed body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple words and direct copying of terms from the prompt, such as 'library members' and 'total loans by category'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasing throughout, such as 'the first age of library members in 2016 children 22%' and 'Four category young adults'. These issues reveal a limited and minimally adequate range of vocabulary for this task type. Word choice is often inaccurate, which occasionally causes strain for the reader trying to interpret the intended data. To improve in this area, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, practice using precise descriptive terms for data trends, and pay closer attention to correct word forms and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures used are very limited, consisting mostly of fragmented or poorly formed sentences. The writer attempts some complex structures, but these attempts are consistently faulty and lack essential verbs and prepositions, as seen in phrases like 'some categories shows fluctuations by followed increment as well as decrement'. Frequent errors in basic sentence construction, articles, and agreement are present throughout the text, which often distorts the meaning and causes significant difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate control over basic sentence patterns, ensure that every sentence contains a main verb, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors by thoroughly proofreading their work.
