Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data by presenting an overview of the charts and reporting the main features, such as the membership age distribution, loan categories, and the 10-year trend in total loans. Key figures are accurately reported, including the peak in 2011 and the popular 38% fiction categories. However, the response tends to over-generalise or state minor data points without fully extending the implications, fitting the characteristics of this level where all parts are addressed but some ideas remain slightly under-developed or heavily reliant on listing raw figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs for each chart feature, accompanied by an introductory overview. Progression is generally clear, though referencing and transitional phrases can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, such as starting multiple body paragraphs with similar transitional structures. Cohesive devices are used, but their management occasionally lacks fluidity, leading to a structure that reads as somewhat segmented rather than seamlessly connected throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully describe trends, proportions, and percentages. There are attempts to incorporate less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion', 'diminished', and 'accounted for'. However, occasional word-choice and word-form errors occur, such as 'type material borrow' instead of 'types of material borrowed' and 'thrid' instead of 'third', though these minor slips do not impede overall communication and remain manageable for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms, many of which contain frequent errors. There are noticeable mistakes in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'This charts provide', 'member of the Little Chalfont library', and 'total numbe of loan'. Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur with sufficient frequency to cause occasional difficulty or strain for the reader, placing this criterion at the lower tier.
