IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the ages of library members in a town called Little Chalfont and the bar chart shows data of the loans provided between 2007 and 2016. Percentage of loans by category in 2016 is also available in the table.
Most of the members in 2016 were adults aging 18 to 64. The number of book loans fluctuated over the years but showed increasing trend overall. Adult's and children's fictional books were loaned the most and surprisingly at the same rate.
In 2016, 51 of the memberships belonged to the middle aged adults from 18 to 64. 22 children were members on the second. Least were the adults aged 65 and over. More than 15,000 books were borrowed in 2007. This figure kept rising steadily till 2011 to above 20,000 and then decreased for next two years. Then the number of these loans recovered to its previous position and even increased slightly in 2016.
Most of the borrowed books in 2016 were adult fiction and children's fiction and were borrowed by the same percentage of 38%. Other categories like adult non-fiction, audio books, young adult, children's non-fiction and DVDs made up only 24% of the total percentage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three visual components provided in the prompt, addressing both the data points and overall trends. The main features are clearly reported, such as noting that adults aged 18 to 64 constituted the largest group of members and that book loans fluctuated while showing an overall upward trajectory. However, some ideas exhibit a tendency to over-generalize or lack full extension. For instance, the reference to memberships in 2016 mentions raw numbers like '51' and '22' without clarifying the unit scale, and certain data relationships are only lightly touched upon rather than thoroughly integrated, which keeps the response at this solid level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence of information, moving from an introductory overview to body paragraphs dedicated to membership demographics, loan trends over time, and category breakdowns in 2016. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response. Nevertheless, cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly abrupt, such as the transition into the third paragraph starting with 'In 2016, 51 of the memberships...' following the previous paragraph's brief sentence. Referencing and linking devices are functional but lack the flexible, seamless progression characteristic of higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'fluctuated', 'steadily', 'previous position', and 'categories'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by some minor word-choice inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as writing 'aging 18 to 64' instead of 'aged 18 to 64' and 'memberships' when referring to member counts. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, effectively showing partial control of features required for higher performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is employed throughout the response, including constructions like 'The pie chart illustrates... and the bar chart shows...' and 'More than 15,000 books were borrowed in 2007.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('showed increasing trend overall', 'on the second', 'Least were the adults') and slight prepositional awkwardness. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the narrative easily while reflecting a standard control of basic and moderately complex structures.
