Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts provide information about Little Chaltfont's public library, including number of members compared by age, the proportions of total loans in 2016 and figures of total loans from 2007 to 2016. The data calibrated in pie chart, table and bar graph are in numbers, percentages and numbers respectively.

Overall, majority of the members of the library are adults. Fiction books were overall the most popular in 2016. Strikingly, the total number of loans increased at the end of the period compared to the initial years.

The pie chart illustrates that the adults of 18 to 64 years constitute over half of the total numbers which is 51. In contrast, adults 65 and over accounts for the least of only about 12.Young adults make up to only 15, whereas, children make up to just under a quarter of 22.

The table shows that the fiction books accounted for 38%, but children DVD's, books for young adults and adult audio books had rates of 1-2% in 2016. Children's non-fiction books were loaned by only 6% of the population and adult non-fiction books had almost double the numbers. The total number of loans in a decade showed minor fluctuations throughout the period. Initially, over 15,000 books were borrowed in 2007 which rose to about 19,000 in the next year , thereafter, reaching at a high point of about 21,000 in 2011 and finally reaching to a peak of about 22,000 in 2016. In between the years, the graph showed a gradual decline, before increasing again.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering the three provided charts regarding Little Chalfont's public library. It selects and reports key features, such as the dominant age group of members (adults aged 18-64), the most popular loan categories (fiction books), and the overall upward trend in loans from 2007 to 2016. However, some aspects are developed more fully than others; for instance, the details regarding loan categories mention specific percentages like 38% and 6%, but the comparison between certain smaller categories lacks depth. Furthermore, there is a minor misinterpretation of data where the pie chart numbers (such as 51 for adults) are described as 'constituting over half of the total numbers' when they actually represent member counts. To reach the next level, the response needs to present a more fully developed overview with sharper contrasts and completely accurate data reporting without minor misreadings of units.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing specific charts. Paragraphing is used adequately, separating the age demographics, loan categories, and loan trends into distinct sections. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, transitional phrases like 'Strikingly' and 'In between the years' feel a bit abrupt, and referencing is not always completely smooth, such as the transition into discussing the table data. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally without disrupting the reader's progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive terms such as 'constitute', 'minor fluctuations', and 'gradual decline'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'Chaltfont' in the opening sentence and awkward word choices like 'the data calibrated in pie chart'. Word formation and collocation errors also appear, such as referring to 'children DVD's' without proper pluralisation or hyphenation and using 'numbers' where proportions or rates might be more precise. These errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the main trends, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise academic vocabulary with fewer slips would elevate this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied grammatical structures such as subordinate clauses ('while children make up to just under a quarter') and passive constructions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the adults of 18 to 64 years'), incorrect preposition usage ('reaching at a high point'), and awkward punctuation around commas and spaces. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move towards higher bands, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over articles, prepositions, and verb complementation.
