Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering the age distribution, the breakdown of loan categories in 2016, and the overall trend in total loans from 2007 to 2016. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, summarising the main trends and proportions, such as adults aged 18 to 64 accounting for the largest share and children's/adult fiction dominating loan types. Key data points are accurately reported and compared, for instance noting that children's fiction and adult fiction both stood at 38 percent. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise or slightly misread exact figures in the trend section, such as stating total loans reached 22,000 in 2016 when the gridline sits closer to 21,700, though this does not detract from the clear general progression reported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into paragraphs, moving from an introductory overview to age distribution, loan categories, and finally the multi-year loan trend. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader, employing phrases like 'Overall', 'Looking first at', 'In terms of', and 'Turning to'. While referencing and paragraphing are generally well managed, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'following this', and occasional punctuation errors in transitions slightly affect the flow, keeping the response at this band level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items and specific terminology related to charts, such as 'age distribution', 'proportion', 'fluctuations', and 'category'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and form, such as writing 'young children' instead of 'young adults', 'had rose' instead of 'rose', and missing prepositions or spacing errors like 'at12%' and 'i n 2007'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present but do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the intended meaning, which aligns precisely with the expectations of this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and subordinate clauses, such as 'while adults aged 65 and over represented the lowest percentage'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding verb tense selection, subject-verb agreement, and missing auxiliary verbs or articles. Examples include 'The charts illustrates', 'total number of loans had rose', 'where as children's DVDs at smallest proportion', and run-on clauses like 'maintains same by following year. after this we see rose...'. These errors require some effort to decode and prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
