The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart, bar graph and table give information about the age of library members, total loans by book types and total number of loans over the span of nine years in a public library in a town called Little Chalfont. Overall, It is evident that half of the library users were adults and the most famous categories to loan were children and adult fiction.
To begin with, almost 51% of the library members were adults as compared to the children who constituted 22% of the users. However, It was not the case with book lending. Children fiction and adult fiction were being borrowed at the same rate of 38%. On the other hand, More people were lending adult non-fiction as compared to children non-fiction, at 13% and 6 % respectively.
Looking at the other age groups, young adults were contributing 15% to the library members while adults over 65 made only 12% of it. Same trend was seen in the book borrowing of these age groups. For example, only 2% of the young adults were lending books and adults over 65 were not lending any.
Furthermore, the total number of loans increased prominently over the span of 9 years. Approxiamately, 22000 books were borrowed in 2016 as compared to 2007, where this number was 16000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the charts, bar graph, and table, providing an overview and making relevant comparisons. For instance, the overview correctly highlights that half of the members were adults and that children's and adult fiction were the most popular loan categories. However, some parts are more fully developed than others, leading to an uneven treatment of the data. While the details regarding membership and loan categories in 2016 are covered, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies, such as stating that 'adults over 65 were not lending any' books when the table shows categories for adult fiction, non-fiction, and audio books, but does not explicitly break down all age groups against every single category in a way that supports this absolute claim. To reach a higher level, the response would need to extend and support all selected features more precisely without generalising or misinterpreting the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing membership, loan percentages, and the timeline of total loans. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the text, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always entirely smooth. For example, expressions like 'Same trend was seen in the book borrowing' lack adequate articles or precise linking, and paragraph transitions feel somewhat formulaic. To achieve a higher standard, the student should ensure that cohesive devices connect ideas more naturally and that information flows seamlessly from sentence to sentence without abrupt shifts.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the general meaning of the data with terms such as 'constituted', 'categories', and 'prominently'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but this is sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as using 'famous categories' instead of 'popular categories', and 'lending' instead of 'borrowing' throughout the text. Additionally, there are minor word-form slips like 'Children fiction' instead of 'Children's fiction'. However, these lexical errors do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate a more precise and flexible command of less common lexical items, ensuring natural collocations and accurate word forms throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'almost 51% of the library members were adults as compared to the children who...' and 'as compared to 2007, where this number was 16000.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including capitalization issues ('Overall, It is evident'), missing articles ('almost 51% of the library members were adults as compared to children'), and minor prepositional or structural awkwardness. Crucially, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended points easily. To reach the next level, the student should aim for a higher frequency of error-free sentences and greater control over complex syntactic structures and punctuation.
