Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response sits at this band because it only partially addresses the task. The student attempts to report on the multiple charts provided, covering general trends such as the distribution of library members by age and the breakdown of loans by category. However, the response suffers from a significant limitation in length, failing to meet the minimum requirement of 150 words by falling 9 words short (excluding words copied from the prompt). Furthermore, some information is inaccurately reported or inadequately developed. For example, the student states that the majority of people were adults registered as 51 person, misinterpreting the chart data which shows 51% or 51 members out of a specific sample, and generalises without fully drawing out the comparative features between the charts. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met, report figures with greater accuracy, and develop the main trends and comparisons more thoroughly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates some organisation through the use of basic linking expressions such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore', but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is broken into short, fragmented paragraphs that do not logically group the information from the different charts. For instance, the reference to 'The third charts' appears abruptly without a cohesive link to the preceding sentences about the pie chart and table. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used mechanically rather than flexibly. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to organise the data logically into cohesive paragraphs, ensuring a smooth transition between the overview, the demographic data, loan categories, and the timeline chart, while maintaining a clear and natural flow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fluactuation' and 'demosterates', but these are affected by frequent spelling and word form errors. Other lexical inaccuracies include spelling mistakes like 'childeren´s' and awkward word choices such as 'experienced the biggest share'. While the vocabulary allows the writer to convey basic information about the charts, the range remains restricted and repetitive. To progress to a higher band, the student should expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data trends, and pay close attention to accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The provided charts provide', 'Pie chart illusterates'), incorrect prepositions ('was registered 51 person'), and missing articles. For example, writing 'was registered 51 person' and 'reaching to a peak of approximately 22000 loan' demonstrates grammatical instability that causes some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, proper use of articles, and accurate prepositions within grammatical patterns.
