Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart, table and bar graph illustrate the proportion of the readers from all age groups as well as the total number of loans across the years from 2007 to 2016.

The pie chart depicts that the highest number of members are adults from 18-64 age group covering 51% of all members. Additionally, the least proportion of membership is taken by people above 65 accounted for only 12% of total library members.

A close analysis of the table provides data on the proportion of loans taken from the library categorised by different writing sections. The most popular library items being borrowed are children fiction and adult fiction which is 38%. The books of adult non fiction are the second highest which are taken as loan by readers. Furthermore, children's DVDs are the least borrowed items from the library.

Across the years from 2007 to 2016, total number of loans increased in 2016 compared to that of 2007. Throughout the years, the bar graph showed dramatic fluctuation as the numbers were not consistent. Eventually, in some years the numbers gradually increased while in the next year it had a decline.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting information from the pie chart, table, and bar graph. An overview is present, and key features such as the dominant adult age group (18-64) and the most popular loan categories (children's and adult fiction at 38%) are identified and reported. However, some areas are under-developed or less precise. For instance, the student mistakenly refers to the age-group breakdown pie chart as containing percentages of 'readers' overall, and the description of the bar graph describing the overall loan trend across years is vague, noting 'dramatic fluctuation' and general inconsistency without citing specific figures or noting the overall upward trajectory from 15,700 to 21,700 loans. To move to a higher band, the student should provide a clearer overall trend summary and ensure all data categories are interpreted correctly without generalizing inaccurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that addresses each visual separately. Information is logically sequenced, beginning with an introduction, moving to the pie chart and table, and concluding with the bar graph. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Additionally,' 'A close analysis of the table,' and 'Furthermore.' However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or formulaic. Additionally, the progression between sentences within the final paragraph regarding the bar graph could be sharper and more logically integrated. To achieve a higher level, the student needs to demonstrate more flexible and sophisticated use of cohesive devices, ensuring seamless transitions between paragraphs and a smoother overall narrative flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical information using terms such as 'proportion,' 'categorised,' 'popular,' and 'fluctuation.' The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'proportion,' 'categorised,' and 'dramatic fluctuation,' showing an awareness of academic style. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'the highest number of members are adults from 18-64 age group covering 51%' where 'account for' would be more natural, and referring to 'children fiction' instead of 'children's fiction.' Spelling is generally accurate. To reach the next band, the student should expand their range of less common lexical items, employ more precise collocations, and refine word choices to maintain greater academic precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases such as 'Across the years from 2007 to 2016...' and 'The pie chart depicts that...'. There is reasonable control over basic sentence structures, and grammar errors are relatively infrequent, rarely impeding communication. Minor errors do occur, such as missing articles ('the 18-64 age group,' 'adult non-fiction'), minor preposition slips ('loans taken from the library' versus 'loans from the library'), and slight awkwardness in subject-verb agreement or modifiers (e.g., 'the books of adult non fiction are the second highest which are taken as loan'). To reach a higher band, the student must incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater frequency and achieve a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
