The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart and table provide the information about the ages of the members of a public library in Little Chalfont town and proportion of total loans by category in the year 2016. Additionally, the bar graph illustrates the total number of loans over a ten-year period from 2007 to 2016 annually.

Overall, majority of the members of the library were middle aged adults and consequently, adult fiction accounted for the highest proportion of total loans. Moreover, the total number of loans had been steadily increasing throughout the period.

In 2016, the members of the Little Chalfont library were a mix of all ages, however, adults between the age of 18 and 64 were nearly half (51%) of the total members and adults who were aged 65 and over accounted for the least at 12%. The proportion of children was significantly less when compared to middle-aged adults yet the table demonstrated the total loans of children's fiction and adult fiction were commensurate.

Young adults were 15%, a little over adults 65 yet only 2% of the total loans were attributed to them. Adult categories summed up to be 53% which is slightly higher than children as for them it was 45%. Furthermore, the total number of loans had rose steadily with slight fluctuations over the years from over 15,000 in 2007 to around 22,000 in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by summarising the pie chart, table, and bar graph. A clear overview is presented right at the beginning, noting the dominant age group and the upward trend in loans. Key features, such as adults aged 18 to 64 making up 51 percent of the members and the peak in adult and children's fiction loans, are accurately reported and well supported with data. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean into minor narrative details, such as comparing the member percentage of young adults directly to loans without fully integrating every underlying figure smoothly, which places the response securely at this solid level rather than higher.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly by source type and theme, moving from an introduction and overview into specific age distribution and loan breakdowns, and finally to the ten-year trend. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are employed to connect sentences, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical, showing the characteristics expected at this level while touching upon the clarity of higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The vocabulary used is generally sufficient to allow flexibility and precision, with attempts to use less common items such as 'proportion', 'commensurate', and 'fluctuations'. Collocations and word choices are mostly accurate, though minor lapses occur, such as writing 'the majority of the members' missing an article or awkward phrasing like 'summed up to be'. Spelling and word formation are generally sound, meaning communication is never impeded, reflecting a strong command of lexical resources appropriate for this tier.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

A variety of complex sentence structures are utilised effectively, including subordinate clauses and comparative constructions like 'while the table demonstrated that...'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and the overall control of grammar and punctuation is good. Minor slips do persist, such as the missing article in 'provide the information about' or the tense choice in 'had rose steadily' instead of 'rose steadily'. These occasional errors do not impede communication and showcase a strong mix of simple and complex forms with good overall control.
