Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the age distribution of members, loan categories, and the trend in total loans over time. An overview is successfully provided in the second paragraph, capturing the main trends such as the dominance of adult members and fiction loans alongside the stability of overall loan numbers. However, some parts are more fully developed than others; for example, the description of loan categories in the final paragraph lists the percentages thoroughly, but certain details regarding the member age breakdown are slightly under-developed or imprecise, such as referring to 'elderly' when the chart specifies 'Adults 65 and over'. Key features are selected and compared, though the approach tends to be mechanical rather than fully integrated.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped into sensible paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph focusing on member ages, and a final body paragraph detailing loan categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Looking first at', 'Additionally', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, although referencing is occasionally a bit repetitive. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the response, ensuring that the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is employed to complete the task successfully. The student attempts less common vocabulary and phraseology, such as 'proportion', 'account for', and 'recorded the highest figure'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and phrasing, such as 'cateogories', 'fictions', 'elderly makes the least' (instead of 'adults aged 65 and over account for the smallest share'), and 'children fiction' (missing a possessive apostrophe). These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is utilised throughout the response. The student successfully constructs complex sentences using subordinate clauses, such as 'while adults between ages 18 to 64, make up the largest share... whereas adults over 64 only account for 12%'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including unnecessary commas (e.g., 'between ages 18 to 64, make up'), minor article omissions or misuses (e.g., 'in library' instead of 'in the library'), and fragment sentences like 'Whereas, adult audiobooks and young adult accounted for only 2% each.' Nevertheless, these errors are sporadic and rarely impede communication.
