Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing 147 words with 8 words copied directly from the prompt. While the student attempts to cover multiple parts of the visual data—mentioning the pie chart, bar chart, and table percentages—the information is frequently inaccurate or confused. For instance, the text claims that 'adults have the highest number of loans by category 2016' and that 'Children's fiction and adult fiction accounted for highest loans category respectively both at 38%', which misinterprets the distinct categories between the membership age chart and the loan category percentages. Furthermore, the overview lacks clarity and the description of the bar chart trends contains factual discrepancies regarding the figures. To reach a higher band, the response must meet the minimum word length, accurately report the data without confusion between different charts, and provide a clearer, more coherent overview of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation in the response, with paragraph breaks used to separate the introduction, overview, and body details, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are often inadequate, inaccurate, or misused, leading to confusing logical links. For example, transition words such as 'However', 'Conversely', 'while', and 'Consequently' are applied inappropriately within sentences, creating awkward transitions rather than logical flow (e.g., 'Conversely, young adults and adult audio books are similarly as the same given period'). Reference pronouns and referencing are also unclear at times, making the text difficult to follow. To improve, the student needs to ensure that cohesive devices accurately reflect the logical relationships between ideas and that sentences are structured to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of the charts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'accounted for', 'decline', and 'marginaly', but these are often marred by spelling mistakes (e.g., 'slighly', 'marginaly', 'acess') or incorrect collocations and word forms (e.g., 'has represents decline', 'recording double as'). Phrasing is frequently unnatural, such as 'are similarly as the same given period'. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, ensure accurate spelling and word formation, and use vocabulary with greater precision to describe statistical data and trends appropriately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent errors are present throughout the text, involving verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples include 'The charts compares', 'bar chart sharply increased', and awkward clause structures such as 'after that showed a slighly rose in 2010 at 20000,Furthermore, in 2013 marginaly changed drop the number of loans'. Punctuation errors are also noticeable, with missing spaces after periods and commas used incorrectly to join clauses. To move up to the next band, the student must increase sentence structure variety and significantly reduce grammatical errors to ensure clearer communication.
