Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the visual data by touching upon the age of members, loans by category, and the overall loan trend across the years. However, some aspects are unevenly developed. The introduction is poorly formed as a single incomplete fragment that fails to clearly frame the charts. While key features such as the dominance of adult members and fiction books are highlighted, some figures reported in the final paragraph, such as the initial loan value, slightly misalign with the source data. To move to a higher band, the overview needs to be fully formed and presented with greater precision and clearer development of all main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically by chart type, moving from membership to categories and finally to overall trends over time. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas. However, the progression is somewhat compromised by mechanical transitions and a lack of smooth cohesive devices between sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the lack of a proper introductory sentence affects the initial flow. To achieve a fully clear logical progression, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure seamless links between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is adequate for communicating the basic information required by the task, but it remains basic and repetitive. There are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'membera' instead of members, 'liberary' instead of library, and 'tottal' instead of total. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to the charts, but inaccuracies in word form and spelling impede precision. To reach the next band, a wider variety of vocabulary with accurate spelling and more natural collocations for reporting statistical data must be demonstrated consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent issues with capitalization, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters in 'fiction were...' and 'the total number...'. Subject-verb agreement errors are also present, as seen in 'adult aged 18-64 accounted' and 'fiction were the most popular category'. Punctuation around numbers and percentages is occasionally omitted or faulty. To improve, the writer needs to exercise greater control over basic grammatical structures, subject-verb agreement, and sentence punctuation while expanding the variety of error-free complex structures.
