Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts and table, including the age groups, borrowing categories, and overall loan trends from 2007 to 2016. However, some ideas and details are presented rather mechanically or under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions the lowest and highest points for the total number of loans, the overall description of the trend lacks depth in connecting intermediate fluctuations. Furthermore, there are minor inaccuracies in reading the data, such as stating that loans were at their lowest rate of 15,000 in 2007 (whereas the transcription shows approximately 15,700) and misinterpreting the maximum value. Despite these minor discrepancies, the overall picture of Little Chalfont Library is addressed, placing the response at this particular level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and arrangement. The introduction successfully outlines what each chart illustrates, and subsequent paragraphs are logically dedicated to different aspects of the visual data, moving from age groups to categories and finally to overall loan trends. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Additionally', 'While', and 'Moreover', although referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical ('Talking about the category's loan'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct visual elements, which helps the reader navigate the report easily. To reach the next band, the integration of cohesive devices needs to feel more natural and seamless rather than formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey basic statistical information and categories such as 'fiction', 'non-fiction', and 'audiobooks'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'proportion', 'category's loan', and 'consistency', but these are accompanied by some inappropriate word choices and minor collocation errors, such as 'category's loan' instead of 'loans by category', 'carries the portion', and 'amount of loan'. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the response. To achieve a higher score, the writer should focus on expanding their range of functional language for describing data and ensuring greater precision in word choice and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Pie charts tells us', 'children occupies', 'loans are its lowest rate'), article errors ('the category's loan', 'the most popular among adults is fiction containing 38%'), and preposition misuse ('in number of having only 2%'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the score at this level. Incorporating more error-free complex structures and improving grammatical accuracy are key steps for improvement.
