Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by covering the pie chart, table, and bar graph. Key features and main trends are identified, such as the highest age group proportion being 51% for adults aged 18 to 64 and the overall upward trend in loans from 2007 to 2016. However, some areas are under-developed or inaccurately reported. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that the 18-64 age group has a '51% take' in the loan category rather than membership, blending two separate charts together. Furthermore, some data points are described rather loosely, such as stating that loans in 2007 went 'above a bit 15000' rather than providing a more precise reading. Despite these minor lapses in clarity and precision, the response presents a relevant overview and covers the main visual data adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and is divided into paragraphs that address the different visual elements. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies on repetitive transitional phrases like 'while' and 'furthermore' to link clauses, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters and blending distinct sentences without proper punctuation. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs sometimes stalls due to run-on sentences and a lack of varied cohesive devices. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to organise information with smoother logical transitions and ensure that referencing between sentences is precise and unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to describe the charts and graphs. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items and specific terms such as 'distribution', 'proportion', 'inclination', and 'steep incline'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocations, such as 'total loan category', 'loan rate has gone above a bit', and 'amount of loan got decrease'. Spelling and word-form errors also occur throughout the text, such as 'chalfont', 'non fiction', and 'DVD's'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score because precision and natural phrasing are lacking.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense usage, and agreement, such as 'The chart provide', 'has been decline', and 'saw increase in amount'. Additionally, punctuation is weak, with missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and run-on structures that lack appropriate conjunctions or full stops. While the errors rarely completely impede understanding, they occur with enough frequency across different sentence patterns to keep the response at this level. Improving punctuation control and ensuring accurate subject-verb agreement will help elevate the grammatical score.
