Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data by outlining the age distribution of library members, the total loan trends from 2007 to 2016, and the book categories in 2016. It meets the requirements of the lower band while showing elements of the next by selecting key features and making relevant comparisons, such as noting that adults aged 18 to 64 formed the largest membership group at 51 percent and that fiction genres dominated loans. However, some areas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of the membership percentages for children and older adults could have been integrated more tightly with the overall picture, and minor details like the exact loan figures from the line graph are painted with broad strokes rather than fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement and information is generally easy to follow, moving logically from membership demographics to historical loan trends and finally to loan categories in 2016. However, progression is occasionally hindered by a lack of paragraphing, as the entire text is presented as a single block. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or basic, such as 'Starting off with over 15 thousand' and 'These loans mostly consisted of...', which places the response firmly within the intermediate band for this criterion. To reach a higher standard, the writer should break the text into logical paragraphs—separating the demographic data from the trends and categories—and employ a wider variety of cohesive links to guide the reader seamlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and successfully attempts less common lexical items such as 'accompaned by', 'demographics' (implied), and various subject-specific terms like 'non-fiction' and 'audio books'. There are some spelling and word-choice errors that do not impede communication, notably the misspelling 'primarly' instead of 'primarily' and 'consistant' instead of 'consistent'. The phrasing 'Combined, they only made 11% of the total loans' is mostly natural, though slightly colloquial. To push into higher bands, the student needs to eliminate basic spelling slips and incorporate a more sophisticated range of vocabulary with precise collocations to describe statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to handle subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'Starting off with over 15 thousand in 2007, jumping over 20 thousand in 2010...' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'Total number of loans were consistant' (where 'number' is singular) and missing articles or prepositions in phrases like 'with slight dip'. Punctuation is also slightly awkward with the semicolon usage in the long sentence detailing the trend. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure better control over subject-verb agreement and refine complex sentence structures for absolute grammatical accuracy.
